Gift card providers ask Americans to donate $51 to charity

Consumers could support charity with charity gift cards. The average American spends upward of $500 per shopping season buying gifts for their friends and family. Now, some of the top charity gift card providers – TisBest.org, CharityGiftCertificate.org, JustGive.org and NetworkForGood.org – are encouraging Americans to spend just 10 percent of that on charity gift cards, rather than conventional gifts.

The organizations note that philanthropic giving to the United States' top 400 charities is down 11 percent in comparison to last year. By purchasing charitable gift cards, Americans can help support those in need while also giving friends and family members a meaningful gift.

"If one in a thousand American holiday shoppers redirect $51 of their holiday gift purchases to buying a charity gift card for friends, family, clients, siblings or children, new charitable giving will top $10 million this year," says Jon Siegel, executive director for TisBest.org. "Together the Charity Gift Card sector urges shoppers to make a difference by giving a meaningful gift that promises money for a charity that needs it."

Many Americans began their holiday shopping last week on Black Friday – November 29. According to comScore, total retail spending grew 28 percent year-over-year.
