Indian billionaires donate to philanthropy
Some of India's richest individuals are giving back to those in need within their country. The Wall Street Journal reported that billionaire Azim Premji, the founder and chairman of outsourcing company Wipro, donated a significant portion of his equity in the company to philanthropy.
The business executive announced his plans on Wednesday. He transferred 88.4 billion rupees – the equivalent of US $1.95 billion – to a philanthropic trust that he owns. His foundation serves primarily rural India and partners with government programs to improve the quality of education throughout the country.
While India is quickly becoming a home to several billionaires, with two of the top five richest individuals in the world living there, philanthropy has been slow to pick up pace. As the paper notes, there are only a few Indians who have made noteworthy contributions to the country.
Earlier this year, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet visited billionaires in India to encourage them to donate to philanthropy. Gates and Buffet themselves have pledged to bequeath the majority of their fortunes to philanthropic causes.
