University of South Carolina frat donates gifts to children in need
The Pi Kappa Alpha chapter at the University of South Carolina is set to host its fourth annual gift wrapping charity event at its location on campus on December 1.
The fraternity selects a local elementary school in need each year and donates various gifts to for the holiday season. This year, the brothers chose Carver-Lyon Elementary, which is in the Richland One School District. As the university's student newspaper notes, the majority of children attending the elementary school live in poverty.
"Our philanthropy is really important during this time of year," Cory Turmelle, the fraternity's philanthropy chairman and third-year finance and marketing student, told the source. "The holiday season is almost here and it is in this time that we cannot forget those less fortunate than us."
The fraternity estimates that it will wrap more than 300 presents this year, and encourages even non-members to come and help out.
College students are often active philanthropists. For example, the Daily Evergreen reported that a Pi Kappa Phi member from the University of Washington biked more than 4,000 miles to support local charities.
